We were asked to come and offer our expertise and advice regarding the current state of the Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), which had been poorly installed by the previous contractors during the original construction phase managed by ISG. The installation issues had led to significant concerns about the usability and safety of the facility, prompting the school to seek our professional insight into how to rectify the situation effectively.

After a thorough assessment of the existing surface, our advice was to plane off the old surface entirely and replace it with a 6mm open grade material. This recommendation was made based on the observation that the previously used AC10 material had not only contributed to an uneven playing field but had also resulted in various trip hazards for the students. The 6mm open grade material would provide a smoother and flatter surface, significantly enhancing the overall playability and safety of the MUGA. This type of surface is specifically designed to offer better drainage and reduce the likelihood of water pooling, which can further degrade the surface and create additional hazards.

Upon completion of the resurfacing project, we took the extra step of applying new playground markings that were not only vibrant and attractive but also designed to facilitate a variety of sports and activities. The new markings were carefully laid out to ensure that they met the needs of the school’s physical education programs, promoting active engagement among students. As we left the school, we felt a sense of accomplishment knowing that we had transformed the MUGA into a safe and functional space, free from trip hazards and equipped with a durable surface that would serve the students for years to come. The new usable surface not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the area but also encouraged more students to participate in physical activities, thereby promoting a healthier lifestyle within the school community.
